Meet the Model: Alivia Byers

Hello, hello! My name is Alivia.

I am an editorial and fashion style model, based in the Inland Northwest.

I love experimenting with style through unique clothing designs and

out-of-the-ordinary makeup styles.

I strive to try something new every time I get in front of the camera.

What are your go-to routines or preparations before a photoshoot?

The first thing when planning a photoshoot is getting into the right headspace. I like to have a vision board to focus my thoughts and narrow down my ideas, especially when deciding what to wear and what makeup to do.

The next step is collecting materials. If I don’t have items that fit my vision, I like to thrift or shop for what I don’t already have. Once the outfit is ready and my makeup is picked out, I give myself a good 4 hours of prep time. I tend to be a bit of a dilly-dallier, so yes, the time is needed! Skin prepping, makeup, outfit, and then hair—in that order. And finally, off to the set!

What are your thoughts on diversity and representation in the modeling industry?

As an Asian-American woman—Filipina, to be more specific—I’ve experienced both the good and the bad of being more outwardly ethnically presenting.

On one hand, I’ve found that many people and places still favor the “All-American” woman or man above all else. I’m often chosen as the “diversity” pick, selected for their image rather than the uniqueness of mine. I’ve made peace with that because, at the end of the day, being the one to check off a box means that others like me get the representation and hope they deserve.

On the other hand, I’ve learned to love so many unique things about myself that I never noticed or cared for before. Collaborating closely with other models on projects has given us time to bond and connect. Through these moments, I’ve realized we all see each other through much kinder eyes than we see ourselves. Other models would admire characteristics of mine that I didn’t give a second thought to—and I did the same with them. I’ve found a new appreciation for my unique features through the eyes of my fellow artists. I believe true appreciation for diversity thrives in communities like these.

How do you maintain your confidence and composure in front of the camera?

When I’m on set and trying to stay focused, having a playlist curated to match the vibe of the photoshoot often helps. I like to surround myself with music that aligns with the emotions I’m trying to convey. However, I also leave room for laughter and moments to let loose. Taking small breaks between sets to release some giggles and tension helps me return to the scene with even more intensity. Sometimes, focusing too hard on expressing a specific feeling can become draining or awkward, especially during long shoots.

Allowing myself brief pauses to reset helps me come back feeling refreshed, almost like I’ve just walked on set again.

Above all, though, the biggest factor in maintaining my focus is having a photographer who can help bring out that side of myself.

When my photographer’s energy is able to match my own and bounce the confidence between each other, it makes my side of the project even easier. Knowing we each believe the story we’re telling.

This summer, I’ve worked on a handful of different projects with numerous photographers. Some were purely for fun and experimentation, like a "Backyard Beach" shoot packed with summer heat. Others were for business ventures, such as the branding shoot I did in collaboration with a local skincare brand, La Canneberge.

Looking ahead to the fall, I have a few exciting projects in the works. One, nearly two years in the making, is a set called “Skin of Stone,” which is sure to dazzle you.

To see these sets and many more, you can follow me on Instagram @aliviuuuh, and don’t forget to check out the tagged photographers on my posts for exclusive content.
